General information: The spike-tailed trumpet snail originates from Africa and Asia. This snail is also fondly called "Nöppi" among enthusiastic aquarists. The nearly 2 cm long light brown to reddish colored shell with its characteristic shape gives the snail its name. The spike-tailed trumpet snails also have a black colored foot. This interplay of colors looks incredible in colorful aquascapes. We furthermore recommend using spike-tailed trumpet snails, if you are interested in breeding, because they reproduce particularly easily and uncomplicated. Even single snails reproduce quickly. The snails are also very useful for aquascapes in general. The spike-tailed trumpet snail is particularly hard working when it comes to recycling plant remains and stirring up the substrate. Our spike-tailed trumpet snails are exclusively German offspring (DNZ).
Keeping: The Nöppies should be kept in aquariums with a min. volume of 12 liters.
Good to know: The Nöppies travel around the aquarium after it gets dark. In the process, the spike-tailed trumpet snails eat plant remains and stir up the substrate. We advise checking your water levels, if see your Nöppies on the glass of the aquarium during the daylight.
Reproduction: The spike-tailed trumpet snails are hermaphrodites. They are capable of self-reproduction. Breeding these snails is therefore very easy. The amount of reproduction of the snails depends on how much food they receive.
Socialization: The spike-tailed trumpet snails can be kept together with shrimps or fish in an aquarium. However, avoid socialization with predatory snails! We also suggest looking at our blog post on the proper acclimation of snails after a transport!
Food: The spike-tailed trumpet snails are omnivores! They are known as "remain recyclers". They eat algae, plant, fish, and shrimp remains, crab food, vegetables, brown autumn leaves and even dead animals in the aquarium. The snail is also happy with the classic sea almond leaf.
Substrate: We recommend fine gravel or sand as substrate for keeping spike-tailed trumpet. The animals like to bury themselves in the sand and loosen it at the same time. A nice side effect: less putrefactive gases are produced in the sand.
Markus' comment: Nöppies are great assets for any shrimp aquarium. The spike-tailed trumpet snails dig up the substrate and eat all the left overs. For any aquascape aquarium, Nöppies are a great option to try!
